Friends Helping Friends is a non-profit organization available to help employees and retirees of Tempe School District No. 3 in times of catastrophic illness. A Helping Hand - Our Story In 1993, Bill Krahn, a teacher from Connolly Middle School, learned he needed a heart transplant. His co-workers from Tempe School District No. 3 formed the Bill Krahn Heart Fund and went to work raising money to help his family with expenses. Although insurance helped cover most of the costs of the transplant, the Bill Krahn Heart Fund volunteers were able to help Bill and his family with the many other costs surrounding a heart transplant that were not covered by insurance. After Bill's successful transplant, the volunteers continued their work by forming Friends Helping Friends. The new organization received a non-profit status so contributions would be tax-deductible. Friends Helping Friends continues to be the helping hand for the TD#3 family of employees and retirees who are facing a catastrophic illness. Since it began, the organization has provided over $185,000 in assistance. This amount is over 97% of all expenses, which essentially means that 97 cents of every dollar spent goes directly to helping individuals in need - Amazing!

In Memoriam Bill Krahn passed away on June 22, 2015. This organization that he helped form will continue to serve the employees and retirees of the Tempe Elementary School District.

How to Request Assistance Complete a confidential grant application. Forms are available at each district site, by calling 480-730-7102, or by clicking on each page to view and print from your browser: PAGE 1 - PAGE 2. This application will ask you for financial information to assist the grant review committee. All information will be held in strict confidence. Applicants may be asked to meet with the grant review committee. Funding Comes From You Employees and retirees have generously supported Friends Helping Friends by: Designating United Way deductions to TD3 Friends Helping Friends. Supporting fund-raising activities. Giving memorial gifts. Encouraging donations from friends and family. Your contributions are always appreciated and will be used to help past and present Tempe School District No. 3 employees.
